Card deck with sharpie markings decorating the cards

Continuum (2021)

Commissioned by Resonant Motion Inc. for their Claire’s Continuum initiative, Continuum is graphic score card game inspired by and dedicated to Claire Randall.

With Continuum, I’ve designed a forum for musicians to playfully engage with the distortion of memory, tinker in the word of multimedia, and embrace ensemble dynamics that reflect the tension between intention and impact.

SCORE EXCERPT: Continuum for Carla Kihlstedt, 2021

Score Excerpt

Game Rules

  1. Shuffle the deck of cards.

  2. The two players must agree on a number of cards to draw from the deck (min. 1 card, max. all cards).

  3. One player removes that number of cards from any part of the deck.

  4. The cards must be placed directly next to each other in a horizontal sequence.

  5. The objective for The Accompanist is to play a continuum of sound, inspired by the musical material written on the staff of each card. The Accompanist may move from one card to the next at whatever pace they’d like, but the sound must significantly change in some way from card to card to indicate to The Photographer which card is in play.

  6. The objective for The Photographer is to provide a real time score for the photographs on each card, allowing space for the influence of memory. The Photographer may or may not choose to engage musically with the continuum of sound produced by The Accompanist.

  7. The piece begins when The Accompanist starts playing.

  8. The piece ends when The Accompanist stops playing.
